At ASC English, many of our students come from overseas for our ESL programs. For those students, we recommend Welcome to America Homestay services. A homestay program gives students the chance to live with an American family and learn more about American culture, all within a safe environment. Here is a look at what to expect from a homestay experience and how to get the most out of it:
What Is a Homestay?
A homestay is a type of accommodation for students studying abroad in which the student lives in the home of a host family. The family usually provides a set number of meals per day, plus a clean, comfortable place to stay. The families that provide homes for students through the Welcome to America Homestay program provide two meals per day plus a private bedroom. For study abroad students, homestays are ideal because they take away concerns about finding a safe neighborhood in a new city. They also offer a great way to experience real, day-to-day life in a new country.
How Can I Get the Most from a Homestay Experience?
One of the biggest rewards you can reap from your homestay is tons of language practice! Engage in English conversation with your host family as often as you can. Be sure to discuss your ESL class schedule with the family and ask about the house rules. Get involved with family outings and events whenever possible to absorb more about the city and culture. Offer to pitch in and help with household chores, and don’t be afraid to share things about your home and culture with your host family.
The team at ASC English is here to help smooth your transition to Boston in every way we can. Call us at (617) 860-3212 to learn more about our homestay recommendations and how to apply to our ESL and TOEFL iBT classes.
