What Are the Levels of ESL Study?

English schools offer classes for students at a variety of proficiency levels. ASC English offers six different levels of ESL classes in Boston: Beginner, High Beginner, Intermediate, High Intermediate, Advanced, and High Advanced.

Beginner level ESL classes are designed for students with no experience in English, and cover basic spelling, pronunciation, greetings, and introductions. High beginner level classes assume that students can already write basic sentences and descriptions. Intermediate level classes begin teaching students who already have basic English skills how to express themselves with more confidence, both in written and oral communication. High intermediate level classes are suitable for students who can carry on basic conversations but may still struggle understanding English newspapers or television dialogue. Advanced and high advanced level classes are for students who are fluent in English and want to take their writing and speaking skills to near-native proficiency levels.
