There are many ways to improve your grammar outside of your ESL classes for greater success and ease when communicating in English, both during your studies and well into the future.

Practice Daily

The key to learning any new skill is practice. While you will get plenty of practice speaking, reading, writing, and listening to English during your ESL classes, it’s also beneficial to find other ways to practice your English skills and grammar outside of class. The more you practice, the more easily you’ll be able to speak and write correctly when necessary, as using proper grammar becomes second nature. Consider taking a short period of time each day to complete English exercises online or using your textbooks; alternatively, you can create your own exercises by writing out several statements and using grammar to change their meaning, such as altering them from positive to negative statements, or changing a statement about the past to refer to the present. There are also several grammar websites and apps that can provide the daily tips and practice you need to improve.

Work with a Friend

Catching your own grammatical mistakes can be a challenge, particularly if you are unsure about a particular grammatical rule. Practicing with a friend or colleague is a great way to improve your grammar by asking them to review a short paragraph you’ve written or hold a simple conversation with you. Working with another individual to actively assess your grammar and make corrections immediately will help you better comprehend the rules of grammar and how to use them correctly.
